Today marked the 11th anniversary of Wear Red Day, and our usual navy livery turned bright red as students and staff proudly Showed Racism the Red Card.
As part of Black History Month, assemblies this week have shared inspiring stories of anti-racism— reminding us all of the importance of unity and respect.
Our Sixth Form also took to the pitch to kick racism out in their annual football derby. In front of a supportive and vocal crowd, Year 12 claimed a 3–0 victory over Year 13 to lift the cup. A fantastic effort from both teams, played in great spirit. Well done to the goal scorers Sam Drummond, Shaun Petrie and Chris Jones.
Headteacher, Ms Pigdon said: “It was lovely to be greeted by a sea of red and smiling faces at the door this morning as we marked the national Wear Red Day. The enthusiasm and maturity shown by our students has been fantastic — they have embraced the day in the true William Howard way: with kindness, respect, and a strong sense of community. It has been a very positive end to the week.”
About the Sixth Form Derby, Mrs Hill, Student Participation Lead, mentioned: “The Sixth Form teams take their derby very seriously by organising trials to a pre-match press conference. They even customise their tops to look like professional shirts including ‘sponsorship’. This year the Year 13 football strips were ‘sponsored’ by Sixth Former Charlie’s family business, Hoi Sun; and Isabella’s family business The Pheasant Inn in Cumwhitton. Year 12 strips were ‘sponsored’ by Joe’s family business, Choice Furniture.”
