It was a truly wonderful start to the school year for 31 of our keen Sixth Form students who visited the Balearic Island of Menorca for the annual Fiesta de Gracia, a colourful street celebration and cultural event with a rich Spanish flavour.
Students had the opportunity to engage in multiple aspects of the fiesta, from the processions of the “gigantes” (giant figurines parading through the crowds) to the breathtaking “jaleo”, where Spanish “caixers” rode their Menorcan black horses through the ancient capital city streets to the beat of the live band. It is considered that touching the silver breastplate on the horse’s heart will bring luck to that individual; needless to say, many a brave student earned their luck with a quick tap of that heart!
There was a wide range of musical performance from both local artists and commercial productions alike, with opportunities to fully embrace Spanish popular culture.
Mrs O’Connor, Miss Leighton and LAB member Mrs Gray who jointly led the trip were very impressed by students’ willingness to engage with different cultures, customs and beliefs.
Mrs O’Connor said: “It was a fantastic few days where our Sixth Form modelled excellent teamwork, open minds and a hunger to explore the world beyond William Howard. It was also a positive way for the new Year 12 students to begin their Sixth Form journey with their Year 13 peers. Together they have made memories which will last a lifetime.”
