We were incredibly lucky to enjoy glorious sunshine for our Open Spaces Summer Fair, which this year celebrated our rural community with an agricultural show theme.
Year 7 students explored a range of traditional craft tents, including woodworking, sewing and organic gardening, while learning about future opportunities with Myerscough Agricultural College and Sustainable Brampton.
There was plenty to see and do throughout the afternoon. Former student Elliott Brough brought along his tractor, while Sam, Ollie and Charlie gave exciting demonstrations of Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, a sport where they compete successfully outside school. Maths Teacher Mr O’Connell’s sheep shearing demonstration was a real crowd-pleaser, and the tortoise race certainly brought plenty of smiles!
Students also had the opportunity to try their hand at stock judging, learning how to assess sheep, ducks, rabbits and guinea pigs.
Our fantastic Year 8 Enterprise students kept everyone entertained with a range of stalls, including welly wanging, cornhole, tin can alley, cakes, biscuits, milkshakes and the ever popular “Guess the Number of Animals in the Jar” competition. Congratulations to our winner from Longtown Primary School – it was a pleasure to have the group of Year 5s join us for the event.
Staff also embraced the fun by taking part in an “Is It Cake?” competition, with a spectacular ice cream cake taking the winning prize.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped organise the event – especially Ms Booker and Mrs Hill – and to Miss Scullion and Mrs Mallin-Cruddace for keeping the afternoon running so smoothly with their lively commentary over the megaphone.
We are immensely grateful to the exhibitors, visitors, staff, former students and volunteers who gave their time, and to all of our students for making the afternoon such a success. It was a wonderful celebration of the farming community that we’re proud to be part of.
